Case study: Arkadia Apartments
Arkadia Apartments consists of 152 apartments, built on a historical brickworks site in Alexandria. Arkadia’s building manager has been driving recycling projects to promote sustainability in the building. One of their key initiatives is rethinking food scraps recycling, to reduce waste and promote sustainable living.
Achievements
Arkadia Apartments implemented a food scraps recycling program that included:
A compost bin
Three rooftop gardens and
A chicken coop.
The chicken coop is located on the roof of the building, and residents can collect fresh eggs.
The chickens are fed with vegetable scraps, and any extra food scraps go into the compost bin. The compost is then used as fertiliser for the rooftop gardens.
Any leftover food scraps are collected and sent to the City of Sydney’s food scraps recycling program.
Engaging with residents
The building manager has built a strong relationship with residents and is in constant communication with them about all things sustainability.
Results
The circular food scraps system at Arkadia Apartments has been a success:
The compost bin has reduced the amount of food waste sent to the landfill, while the rooftop gardens and chicken coop have provided residents with fresh produce and eggs.
The program has also helped to build a sense of community among the residents who take turns caring for the chickens and gardens.
In addition, the food scraps recycling program has reduced the building’s carbon footprint and promoted sustainable living.
